Replace Family

Morning,

I am trying replace a family to other and for that i select the family in the project browser, reload... Then in the project browers appears both families andin the model doesn´t change the family to the other. I check that the subprojects were open but i don´t know what is happening. I like to change one family by the other.

Regards and thank.

Is the family in-place by any chance?

The way am I reading it, it sounds like you are trying to swap out one family instance placed in the Project, for a another family type.  If so, you would select to highlight the family instance in the Project and pick a different type to replace it with from the Drop-Down Box under the Properties Palette Preview Selector.

...or perhaps you are meaning this:

Family Already Exists.jpg

Upon reloading the revised family into the Project, you get the "Family Already Exists" pop-up dialog box.  Choosing "Overwrite Existing and its Parameter Values" this will apply any dimensional value changes made in the family to all the instances of the family already placed in the Project.  If you choose "Overwrite Existing Version", no changes are made to the Family instances that are already placed in the Project.

Thanks a lot for your answer. It is not a in-place family, it is a generic family.

Regards.

Ah..ok just follow @barthbradley steps and you should be able to swap the family. However if two of your family have different category like one is furniture and the other is site object, Revit will separate them and won't allow you to mix. So you may have to edit the family and change both family to have same category. Load those family and you are able to swap back and forth.

Make sure they have exact the same file name then you load the new one in it will replace the old one regardless of category.

Hard to know for sure without more specific information. You are welcome to post the Project/Family for testing. Let's see if we can replicate the issue.

Finally, it worked. I am not sure what the problem was but now with your answer it work! Maybe a topic of shared parameters.

Thanks so much.
