Remove the tool icon from the Revit cursor

I just upgraded to windows 10 and now Revit 2017 shows an icon of whatever tool I am using next to the cursor (see below). I find it bothersome and see no need for it as I know which commands I am using. Is there a way to get rid of the icon and just have a standard cursor pointer?

The cursor in Revit changes according to context or the command you are using. It is designed as a UI element to help user complete the task rather than a generic pointer or crosshair. So the answer would be - no.

I realize it is supposed to help, but it is really rather annoying when you don't need a UI prompt. I know when I start a command, so I don't need Revit to remind me. But the thing is, I have been using Revit 2017 for over a year now, and it didn't act like this before, which indicates to me there must be a way to set it back to normal. Are you sure there is no way to change it back?

Umm...the tool icon representation is in 2016 too.

Really, I have never noticed it until you pointed it out.

I have never seen that one.  How did you get it to appear?

We have started upgrading our machines from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It seems to appear on some (but not all) of them now. Every tool you use shows its icon (this one is the align tool) after you initiate the command. It ends of getting in the way sometimes if you are doing precise things.

Strangely by the replies here many people have been seeing this for quite sometime. Maybe it is A/B testing by Autodesk.

I didn't do anything...Just clicked on a modify command and it shows the icon next to the cursor.

Does the same for text and dims too.

I should mention, I am using Windows 7...so it isn't a Windows 10 feature.

Hi @jworkman

When you are working in the drawing area, Revit displays a tooltip near the cursor. This same information is repeated in the status bar.

  • When you move the cursor over an element, the tooltip identifies the element, showing its category, family, and type.
  • When you are using a tool, the tooltip provides hints on what to do next. (This is an in-canvas tool-tip)

To turn off these tooltips, define the Tooltip assistance option as None, as described below.

To adjust or turn off tooltips

  1. Click File tab Options.
  2. On the User Interface tab, for Tooltip assistance, select one of the following values:
    1. Minimal: For ribbon tooltips, displays only the brief descriptions, suppressing the display of additional information. In-canvas tooltips display as usual.
    2. Normal: (Default) For ribbon tooltips, displays a brief description when you move the cursor over a tool, followed by more information if you leave the cursor in place for another moment. In-canvas tooltips display as usual.
    3. High: For ribbon tooltips, displays the brief description and more information about the tool (if available) at the same time, without a delay. In-canvas tooltips display as usual.
    4. None: Turns off ribbon tooltips and in-canvas tooltips so they no longer display.
Note: When you turn off tooltips, context-sensitive help (F1) is also turned off. If you want context-sensitive help to be available, set Tooltip assistance to Minimal.

Please help, this did not work for me. Although the toolbar help comments disappeared i still get the symbol next to the cursor. This is a new occurance after I switched to a new computer. I've been using revit for 5 years and don't need to know which command I am using. It is super distracting.

So are squirrels. I would suggest mind filters.

Great, thanks for the obnoxious comment and the likes from a 'moderator'. My first every question on here and I'm glad to see there is 0 constructive advice.

You're welcome. I'm sorry but the above solution does not work and there are no other options like others have said.

A moderator did not like my comment. If you thought my comment was obnoxious and not funny as intended, I can see why a little icon is "super distracting".

Most of us do not need the icon either. Over time, you should be able learn to look past it. Again, think of it as a mind filter.

Figured it out, for anyone else that has this issue - needed to update the graphics card on my Citrix desktop machine. Hope this helps.

I would also like to see an option to remove these icons.  They change depending on the command you are in and they block my ability to see how I am aligning elements.  For example, I'm trying to move one line to the midpoint of another line and cant see the midpoint snap triangle symbol because its blocked by this big black symbol around my cursor. I'm working from a temp computer while my regular computer is being upgraded and this tool icon is costing me time. I don't have the option of upgrading my graphics driver.
