Relocate Project (Vertically) and subsequent Topo Surface Contour Labeling issue

I created a project file, and initially left the Project Base Point and Survey Points at 0'-0".  My finished floor was 0'-0" as well.

Then I received the .dwg survey file, so I want to create a topo surface and have it in the correct location relative to the building model, and want the contour lines to be accurate as well.

So, I used the "Relocate Project" command under the "Position" tab on the "Manage" menu.  I relocated it to be exactly at the actual surveyed finished floor, which in this case, is 5493.58'.  And I know that this is the same as clicking on the Project Base Point in a view and manually entering 5493.58'.  I left the survey point at 0'-0".

When I attached the survey .dwg, I attached it at the main floor level.  If I go to an Axon view, I see that the contour lines in that survey file are way above the rest of the survey lines, and the building model.  If I then create a topo surface from the survey, it is created up where the contour lines are, basically twice as high as they should be.  So, I have to go into an elevation view and move the topo down by 5493.58'.

That works, except that, the contour lines move, so that when I try to label them, instead of getting a 5490'-0" contour, I get a 5490'-6 31/32" contour.  Why don't the contours stay where they are, since in the site settings are set to show contours at 1' intervals starting at 0'-0"?  My workaround is that I changed the site settings so that the contours pass through 5 1/32".  That moves the contour lines back to the even foot intervals.

Am I not doing this right?  It seems that the contours should not have moved...

Thanks in advance for any help...

James

Hi James

I would create a separate Revit model for the terrain and Link in the .DWG. then I would Acquire the coordinates from the .DWG. this Revit model can then be linked into the Revit building model and again coordiantes can be Acquired. (Manage> Project Location> Aquire Coordinates).

If you have already setup your model, then make sure that before you set the location using the Project BasePoint, that you unlicp it. move the icon to a known position in your model and then re-clip before entering the actual values of that position.

Paul Aubin has written a nice guide on Shared Coordinates :

Hope this helps

James,

How did you solve this?  I have the same question.

Thanks,

JK

JK,

It took me a while to get a response that worked. Here’s one that I did once, but haven’t done it in awhile. I don’t do this enough to have it memorized. Hope it works for you.

James

• Link the CAD file as you have been, un-pin and move it down in elevation.
• Once you have physically moved the CAD instance where you want it, Acquire Coordinates from the CAD file. This will automatically update the value displayed in the project base point for you.
• Create a toposurface from import.
• Add a contour label; note they should be closer to what you expect now, since you moved the CAD file down and acquired coordinates from it. That keeps it close to the internal origin, while acquiring coordinates updates the project base point value.
