Does anyone know if it is absolutely necessary to name reference planes and what would be the consequence of not doing so.

No consequence. It's up to you. The primary reason to name them is to be able to identify them and their purpose, such as a workplane.

Hi Barth,

Thank you for your reply. That helps a lot.

Any idea why the ref level appears on the back elevation and not on the front elevation?

Similarly on the right elevation but not on the left. Odd.

@tcgb: I'm not following you. "Ref Levels"?  I thought your questions was about Ref. Planes.  Can you post a screenshot or something?

Not sure how to take a screen shot. The "ref. level" symbol with the blue circle. Looks like a BMW badge.

"Ref. Levels" are totally different than "Ref Planes".

Why you can see them in one view and not the opposite is because they aren't within the view range.  Adjust your view range, or move the markers in plan view.

Select them levels on the elevation where you see them (obviously), right click and Maximize 3D extent.  Now you see BMWs on the other elevation.  (You won't see they using turn signals though)

Hi ToanDN,

Yes this works. Just opened a new family template to build a new fully parametric timber truss.

Not sure why the ref levels do not show by default on all family elevations

It is necessary if you want them to appear in lists for choosing work planes for hosting elements.

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Yes that would be useful. So I'm hearing its not absolutely necessary but it might be good practise anyway for the reason you just stated.
