Reference plane issues in families

I am creating a relatively simple countertop family, the family has 3 different void regions on parameters (center, left & right).

I would like to be able to drag the overall width of the countertop as well as the void locations while in plan view. I have been able to achieve this for the most part, however, when I drag the width from say the left side, the left void location does not drag with the edge of the countertop. I have tried locking the dimension and still no luck.

Any thoughts?

 

I would also like to add that this dimension does not change when I input a width dimension in the properties panel.

Is the out-of-the-box Counter Top w Sink Hole.rfa not working for you?  

 

EDIT: Ah! 3!  Post the Family you are working on.

I was unable to open the file you sent. My company is using R23 and does not use the template families.

I don't think it will help.  It only has 1 sink opening. You want 3 sink openings. Correct?

Yes, I need to have the 3 notches in the rear. The cutouts work as they should with the exception of the issue when dragging the width and the left & right reference planes not moving with the side of the countertop. Maybe these images will better explain what I am trying to achieve.

 

When trying to extend say, the left side. the dimension to the edge of the left cutout changes.

I would like this dimension to stay the same when using the grip points to extend the length.

You cannot do what you want as all instance parameter will adjust when you drag one of the grips. If you have a grip that more than one instance parameter is referencing how is Revit supposed to know you are wanting to only stretch the one for the overall width and leave the void width as is?

 

If you want a parameter to remain constant when dragging a grip it needs to be a type parameter.

I know for a fact that is not accurate. There is a family that someone who is no longer with my company created that does what I want, just not for the same application. That element can be stretched, and the adjacent reference plane moves with it as desired. I have tried reverse engineering the condition but cannot seem to get the same result even with the same setup and parameters.

If you can't share the model, share a screenshot of the family in plan view showing the ref planes and the dimensions/constraints/parameters as well as the parameters window.

I was able to achieve what I was trying to do by creating an additional set of dimension constraints and having them reference the dimensions. This allows the reference planes or lines to stay in consistent locations when dragging the length.

That is interesting. I have attached my test family and it does work. One note is that the parameters you are using in the dimensions for the ref planes are the ones that have to have the formula.
