Reference line-vertical plane

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to create a simple door family with a swing in Revit 2026.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • Placed a reference line perfectly aligned and locked at the hinge.
  • Assigned a parameter (from reference line to the "close" position) to control the swing angle.
  • When I go to extrude the door panel, I want to use the vertical plane of that reference line.

The issue: when I hover over the reference line (even using Tab), only three planes appear — the ones at the start point, end point, and the horizontal plane. The vertical plane I need never shows up.

Has anyone faced this before? Is there a workaround or a better approach to get the extrusion to follow the vertical plane of a reference line?

Thanks in advance!

Do not make your life hard 🙂 If you wish the panel to rotate with the reference line, use the horizontal plane of the reference line and extrude the panel vertically.

If you wish to use the vertical plane of the reference line, simply switch to another view where it is easier to tab select it and set it as workplane. You are not bound to the floor plan view, you can use an elevation view or the 3D view as well.
