Realistic/Rendered Views - Black Surfaces, Rainbows, Slowdown (With Solution!)

Today I came across a problem in Revit that I had never seen before. Searching various BIM forums didn't turn up any answers. I thought it would be a good idea to post details about the problem and solution here, in case anybody else encounters the same problem.

Rendered views and 3D views set to the Realistic display style displayed incorrectly. Many surfaces were black or dark gray, and a number of surfaces had a rainbow effect, as shown in the following images:

Further, it was very slow to navigate or reorient Realistic 3D views, and creating a Draft quality render took nearly ten minutes with a number of long pauses in the rendering process. I tried a number of Autodesk's solutions for similar problems, for instance those listed here and here, but they did not solve the problem.

Ultimately I determined that the problem arose from displaying a linked Revit model in the 3D view. Unchecking the linked Revit model in the Visibility/Graphics dialog box fixed the graphical corruption problem, as shown in the final attached image. I hope that this serves to help someone who runs into the same problem that I did.
