Hello,

I would like to create a railing where part of it is transparent.

With the material settigs i can get it to work in 3D but not in a 2D view. Is there way to solve this problem?

See screenshot below:Railing transparency.png

When you say it works in 3D, you're probably using realistic mode with material that has opacity maps, so it works. But in elevations you switch to hidden line mode, and in that mode material opacity will not work.

You can do it, but not easily. And it slows down your model to the point you have to consider if it's worth it.

Hi @Xapod,

Trancparancy is not supported in 2D views, you can use a viewfilter to make the Railing transparent, the (top)rail/posts will also become transparent but depending the scale it won't be noticable.

If you don't want the posts/rails to become transparant, then define the mesh in the toprail (in reality the mesh will also run along the posts), and because the toprail is a seperate subcategory and shared, it can be overwritten by a viewfilter without making the posts/rails transparent. Note: in the viewfilter use the category Railing > TopRail for this to work with the toprail.

Below a sample with the mesh defined in the TopRail + viewfilter in the topleft view.

Another option would be to use a 3D view as Elevation.

How do you define a mesh as a top rail, since top rail is just a simple profile.

Exactly, with a profile as a volume not a 3D modelled mesh.

A 3D mesh would be to detailled/heavy for a model (depending on amount of fence)

Anyway attach a sample for a quick transparent mesh fence in elevations with use of Railings:
