When opening a workshare model I get this dialog box. I have always use the "Overwrite" options but do not know why. What is the functional difference between the two options and when should one be used over the other?
If you use the first option, copy of the central model file will overwrite your existing local file.
If you use the second option, copy of the central model file will create new local file with date and time (timestamp) attached to it's name.
Second option will also keep you current (old) local file as well.
Second option is better if you have enough hard drive space available.
Edit:
If you are using second option, you can later go to the folder where your local Revit files are stored (C:\Documents) and delete the old local files you are sure you don't need anymore to free up space.
Hello,
Technically, worksharing is a method which works between a local copy and a central file. You do your changes on your local copy and synchronize the changes with the central file.
You get a copy every time you try to open the central file and Revit asks if you want to overwrite on existing copy or create a new copy by appending a timestamp.
Overwrite option is good for less hard drive space occupation. Because the more appended timestamped copy, the more hard drive space filled.
Having different local copy may be good for backup purposes. But you have already a recovery option while working on LAN based worksharing. So it's not that much necessary. I use that option for a specific change, day or a milestone that i want to keep and reach easily rather than trying to find in recovery files. However, you can just add a note/tag on the synchronization window to your version and find from the note as well.
These are my ideas.

Thanks for the info. As I said, I have typically use the Overwrite option. When I need to make a major change that might not workout too well, I detach from central and give it a new suffices. That way if it blows up in my face I can go back to the turning point. I have never been to good at cleaning out old junk files so should probably stick with the Overwrite.
