"Can't Make Type Error" while inserting door

Hi there wonderful Revit Masters!

I've come to Revit from AutoCAD so obviously things are a lot different and there are still some things I don't fully understand yet. I have a small issue that I would really appreciate some help with (if anyone can). On a lovely little floor plan I have drawn up, I am getting an error while placing an external door and I have no idea how to solve the error. And it only works with this particular door. No other external doors or internal doors.

and thanks again for anyone who can help me with this 🙂

Welcome to the forum.

Well, all I can say is that there is a problem in that particular door family. What problem? Impossible to know without looking at the family.

Thank you, nice to be here!

Yea it does sound like a problem with this family. There are only two sizes for this door and this is a brand new install of Revit just last week. So how would I look at this family specifically and what am I looking for?

Cheers!

Is that family part of the installation of Revit? Usually the families that come as part of the library don´t have that type of error. Maybe the family was modified? What version? Can you upload it here? If the family is not 2017 version, I could open it here.

Yes, this family is part of the Revit install. I haven't modified it either. I'm from New Zealand so this is the NZ version of Revit 2017.

I have attached the door for you.

Thanks for posting the file. As I wrote above, I don´t have the 2017 version installed yet. I hope that someone else can assist you.

Doors are hosted families...ie: they need a hosting wall to reside in. The thing about this door family (it has to be) is that it is not properly locked to the host (in family editor) therefore when you have a wall (in your project) which has a thickness greater than the host/wall thickness based on which this door was modeled, it will fall outside the host => cannot be created and results in similar errors to that which you are getting

To test, (in the project) change the thickness of your wall or place a new wall of thickness 6" or 150mm (this is the default thickness of the host wall in the door family template) and the door will or should be placed with no issues. Hence, in such case (and I am 99% sure it is the case) you need to edit the door family and lock it properly to the interior and exterior reference planes in order for it to adapt properly to any wall thickness you use in the project.

Edit: as a matter of fact...if whoever modeled this door did not lock it to the host (to start with), you might as well need to consider dumping this door and finding yourself a new family or model one urself. I am guessing none of the geometries in that family are locked to anything

I do not have 2017 so I cannot do it for you unfortunately...

Yes, fantastic this worked. Thank you for your help!!

I thought it could be meant for a specific wall size but I didn't know how to check that info out. Obviously within the door family itself but again, I didn't know what specific size to look for eg. Frame Thickness.

So how can I check this info out in the future? What specific door dims would I add together to find out what size wall it would fit?

Cheers!

I'm not sure if it's meant to be for a specific wall type...who goes through all that trouble of modeling a family might as well model it properly.

As for what to check in the future, that's atop general question cuz there could be many reasons for the same error. It's just that the one above is more or less a common one. For a start you can open the family in FE and flex it to see if it works in the editor the way it should and if it would adapt to the different situations where you would use it then check the geometries and if they are constrained properly. The first question that comes to one's mind is "why isn't this locked to anything" if everything has to sync together it can't be right if you have a geometry flying around solo

im not sure what else to add...it just comes with practice I guess and becomes more of a habit. I've never thought about what should I check first!
