I am having a significant error in Revit 2018 that I have never encountered before. I have a large team working on a hospital project. Twice in the past week, we have encountered the attached error. I have transcribed it below for convenience.
User 1 error:
"Can't edit the element until"[USER2]" resaves the element to central and relinquishes it and you Reload Latest.
User 2 error:
"Can't edit the element until"[USER1]" resaves the element to central and relinquishes it and you Reload Latest.
At least two users will be listed in the error acting as a circular reference of sorts. I have noticed that usually one is in our primary office (Long Island, NY) and the other is located in our satellite office in upstate NY. Could lag when syncing cause a problem? We have all worked on projects together before using Revit 2017 without this issue. Currently, I must Detach from Central to force relinquish. I am looking for a better solution and to avoid requiring checked out worksets that would make view templates harsher.
Thanks!

Please clarify--For collaboration across the WAN,
Are you using C4R or BIM 360 Design? Or Revit Server?
Those errors look like someone is trying to edit an element that someone else is either the Owner or Borrower of the Workset. It might be good to use the Communicator in Collaborate Tab so team members can see editing requests, and have a standard for STC at intervals of say 1/2 hour or so.
Sometimes latency across the WAN can cause these problems. What is bandwidth/up/down speed of the network?
More questions:
How large is file? Lots of linked models? How many users are on the project? Do all projects have the problem, or just this project?
Like Cliff asked, I'd be interested in knowing how your satellite office is connecting to the model. Hopefully it is not via a VPN.
We are not using C4R, BIM 360, or Cloud. Both teams access the same Revit project on a common server based here in the main office. IT has confirmed it is a Local Area Network (LAN) not a WAN. We have a gigabit network. A new datapoint is that we had the error again this morning between two Long Island Office users. Guess my theory about inter-office issue has a hole in it.
I am going to implement a schedule for Sync to Central so that everyone has a set time and to avoid the other issue we saw where it took a long time to STC due to multiple users attempting at once. I think I need to double-check a few people's settings to ensure STC relinquishes.
The file is 102,368 KB currently with two links. We have a large number of users: 5 upstate and 8 on LI. This is the first and only project I have encountered this error. Most projects in office are in R17, though I would have expected less issues with a later release.
Regards,
Scott
If there is any lag between offices it can still cause issues.
Your best bet is to get Revit Servers installed so that your satellite office can save to their local server and let the servers do the syncing.
Just because I can access a server in the office in Florida and I am in Washington does not mean it is a good idea to do it. That is what Revit Server is for.
