"broken" window family from manufacturer

Hello - I'm working with a 1930's historic property that has steel casement windows. The only parametric model for these older type steel casement windows I could find came from a manufacturer. It's a great family... yet it has 2 issues. Issue 1: I can control how many mullions and muntins from the properties, yet it refuses to work and is "broken" when I either the mullion or muntin parameter are set to "1". Often I need windows with "1". Issue 2: The model also refuses to be any color other than red, leading me to have to correct it in my View Template or within the Print settings. I've dug and dug into the model, breaking it, and re-trying for days; yet no luck. Hoping someone more versed in parametric (window) models would spare me mercy and let me know if it's possible to rectify these issues with the model.

Nothing is not rectifiable. And as simple as this window looks, you do not need more than the basic knowledge of Revit families and family modeling. the Mutt-ins & Mullions in this family seem to be an array. In the older versions of revit one needed to nest a single element and manage the visibility with a parameter because arrays could not be 0 or 1. Hence adit the family and check these first if they were properly associated.

The red color is inherited from the object styles. Change that and reload and the color would be fine (else you would need to override that subcategory in the model

you can give it shot and if it doesn’t work, upload the family and maybe someone might help you fix it.

there used to be some good windows with muttins and mullions in the content library but I do not recall which one it was. I can check later and upload a few for you

It definitely does seem to be an array - it's a shame it can't be 1, as that would be incredibly useful. Still having horrible luck with trying anything on it, sadly. I've attached the family model here. Perhaps you'll have better knowledge. Any similar window components would be helpful, too though!

The family was created/modeled as described in my previous reply:

  • An array is used when either of the mullions/muttins are two or more (an array in the horizontal direction and another vertical).
  • A single mullion and a single muntin with visibility control are used when the array value is set to 1.

The above setup was implemented in a nested family (refer to Image 1 below) loaded into the host family that you attached here, which is fine. However, there is an issue which lies within the nested family itself and how the arrayed elements were constrained. Upon opening, an error appears, indicating that the family may behave unpredictably because the geometry, extrusions, or elements were not properly constrained to the reference planes.

The color issue, is as stated in previous reply...check the Object Styles (See last Image)

Proceeding without removing constrains, the first thing you would notice are the horizontal and vertical spacing parameters in the 3D...Parameters showing like that in 3D indicate that they driving the array/geometry directly. Ideally,

  1. You lock the geometry to the reference planes
  2. Then you drive the reference planes using parameters

You may fix the visibility parameters mentioned in previous reply and live with it but the issue mentioned above is relatively simple to fix. I’d be happy to help you with it; however, I currently don’t have Revit 2021 on this laptop—only Revit 2025. I have Revit 2022, if that works for you... let me know
