I want to clean the model, because the file is so heavy, and is difficult open it.

Not only purge but make sure you dont have a thousand CAD links attached to the model. These will make the model heavier.

How heavy? You need to watch what you are purging...purge in Revit does clean up things but it is not meant to be used as Purge All in AutoCAD...so if you use it, do use it with caution.

1. You need to look more into what you are modeling and how you are modeling ex: excessive use of swept blends and adaptive components makes your model super heavy when lots of elements do not need to be modeled that way ... And Purge does nothing to fix that

2. If you model your site (along with external works/furniture) and building within same model, you would be making the model heavier when you don't need to...it is recommended to model the former and the latter separately in two different models

3. Another example is using exploded CAD imports instead of links...the former loads your model up with useless objects some of which Purge doesn't clean (ex: unused imported patterns from CAD)

Purge will not really improve the performance if examples similar to the above apply...you might want to consider upgrading your hardware too if you are looking for performance

We work with models ranging between 250-500mb in size and we don't consider them heavy...

In my opinion CADs should only be used as a temporary thing while modeling and not a permanent thing. Try to keep them at a minimum in your model. If your consultants are working in CAD and you need to import their work make sure you bring in what is needed only. I purge the cads and create w-block of the area I need before bringing the CAD into revit. These are typically the culprit of "heavy" models. Make sure the CAD doesn't have a bunch of xrefs as these will also be read on revit and thus making it heavier. Do you know how to remove / unload them?

If I want to do a complete clean up of a Revit file, I will use purge, audit, and compact file.

to audit: click here

to compact: save-as, then open the options, select the "compact file" button, then save using the same name.

Ok, if the file is a link then either unpin it and delete it or go to: Inserts - Manage links - CAD Formats and either unload or remove. If the CAD is an import then you have to delete them from the view. Just click on the CAD and hit "Delete". Hope that helps. Typically CADs are the things that make a Revit file slow and big. If that doesn't work, try purging all unused items.  Go to Manage - Purge Unused. A window will open and you can manually deselect things you rather keep.
