Protocol for Changing Revit Family Nomenclature

BigPicture045_0-1669410973412.png

I need to replace a cabinet family that is used in multiple places in the project. The width is controlled by instance parameters and needs to remain the same.

The existing family will have the nomenclature changed and the family category will change from casework family to a generic model family.

Is this possible to do without individually changing each old family and re-inputting the instance parameters?

No tsure what you are going to change. What you can try to do is to select that casework family, edit it (opening in family editor) and changing the category to generic and load it back into the project. Then you can edit it again and make other changes. It depends on what you are  going to change how much impact it will have on the placed instances. If you are talking about lots of instances you could control this process with Dynamo.

With Dynamo you could read parameter values form the placed instances in combination with the Revit ID and store it in Excel or something. Make modifications to the family and reload it back into the project and then you could write the parameter values back to the proper parameters (of course make sure you have backup and test on copy first).
