Project Template File Size Not Updating With Save

I am setting up our project templates, starting from an existing project. I am going through and cleaning everything out that isn't needed as the file was originally 140 MB, and then saving the template using save (as opposed to save as). This doesn't seem to change the file size regardless of how much I clean up. However, if I use save as (either with a different name or just saving to a different folder), the template file size updates. Is there a reason for this?

If I start a project using this template, the file size of the new project is the size it should be. But again, the template file size stays the same and is much larger.

As it sits now, the file is 65 MB, and if I do a save as, it's down to 40 MB. I guess I just want to make sure I'm not losing anything doing a save as and that this is normal behavior. If not, what am I supposed to do to the template to make the file size reflect the actual file.

If you just save, the the file still retains the undo history.  Close it first to check the size.

I appreciate the reply but closing it changes nothing. It's closed right now. 65 MB. I can open it, no undo history, save as, 39 MB. Just doesn't make sense.

When you Save as, Revit compacts the database so the new file is smaller.  It really doesn't matter since when you open the new smaller file and work on it, especially as a worksharing center file, the file size will get bigger in no time.  I wouldn't be too worried about it.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. So I assume that means that as I go through and clean up the file, the database isn't being reconciled to reflect the deleted items until I save as.

I guess it doesn't really matter as apparently the database gets updated when a new project is started using that template because the size of the new project is correct. Pretty annoying spending all this time cleaning this up and still having a 140 MB template, though. Now I know why.

Thanks for the response.
