Problem with void cutting wall

Hello,

I’ve created several window families with voids, and all of them work except for one. This particular family contains multiple voids, and when I load it into my project and cut the wall for the window, all voids work—except for half of a segment that isn’t being cut.

I’ve already deleted the voids, recreated them, and locked them to the correct reference planes, but the issue persists.

Here are some photos for reference:

  • Photo 1: Example of the issue.
  • Photo 2: All voids highlighted in green.

(Note: The wall is drawn in three parts.)

You need to load that into a new empty model, place in a wall making sure it recreated the issue, then upload that .rvt here for someone to help you with it

propebly you should check your family, your void is not deep enough.

post your family here.

I fix your family and add extra Variable to control the cut of void by some simple change ,you use the two different void with two different method to cut the two different walls.
you can use the cut in family for the second void too and join the two wall .this two method are not so many good, and in large and heavy project you get the a few error for joining the walls.
So i use the another method myself to cut the walls for frames or somethings.
I fixed this family in your method.

The only problem in your family is that you locked the interior void to the nested window/frame from one end and left it loose on the other end. Hence it is constrained in a way that the nested window geometry is driving the voids, which Ideally should be driven by a reference plane. You should have simply locked the offending void to the reference plane relative to the face of the host. and control its offset based on the location of the window using a formula.

Moreover, why would you need 3 voids, 2 of which share the same width (the one at the center as well as the interior one, the way they are constrained, they are acting as one. Normally the center void encasing the window is used to cut deepr left/right from the wall core or insulation to generate a cut similar to the below

FWITW, you will only learn how properly model when you understand the cause as well as the effect. Dumping all your work for an alternative is not an approach I would recommend.

Thank you for the explanation! I thought I had locked everything correctly, but I see where I went wrong now.

The multiple voids were actually created by my co-worker. I’m new to the firm, so I’ve been hesitant to make too many changes to the original designs right from the start. We’re currently transitioning from AutoCAD to Revit, and my colleague took the lead on this initially.

My intention was simply to ask for clarification, but you’re absolutely right in you rinsights!

Thank you again!
