Purge Unused is the perfect tool for this.

...assuming they are not placed in the project. If they are placed in the project, then you'll need to find and delete or replace them in the project.

Then they must be in the project somewhere.  Find and delete/replace them.

Are they nested shared families from some crappy family found online?

If you want to see them, right click a type in the browser, select all in project then delete if you don't need them. You can also create a schedule to select multiple items and highlight them in model to see them.

Go to 3D view, Wireframe, turn on all Model Categories, set View Phase Filter to "None" and then select the Family Type in the Project Browser, right-click and press Select All Instances -- and then Temporarily Isolate them in the View.  The next steps are up to you.  Do you want to delete or replace them?

...Note: Visibility of Family in View may also be affected by View Detail Level (e.g. Coarse, Medium, Fine).
