Problem using downloaded .rvt families

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello everyone,

I need to use families that are published as RVT files and not RFA. I've downloaded them from "bimobject.com".

I appreciate if someone told me what to do or how to convert them into RFA files or even export included families to separate RFM files.

Thank you!

If its saved as a .rvt it is usually because it is a "system family" such as a wall, roof or floor that cannot be saved as a normal family type. You need to copy and paste it from the downloaded .rvt into your project.

Open both the new file and the downloaded file. Go to new file. Go manage/transfer project standard. Select "Copy From..." . "Check None" and then check "Roof Types". Click OK. This will transfer all the roof types from the downloaded file. After that you can use those types to create new roofs.

I tried copying it, it doesn't work! It won't appear in the project!

Are you sure?  Depending on what  you are trying to copy over they may have loaded into the project, but won't appear until you actually create it.

You can also use Transfer Project Standards.

So the families are provided to you in a Revit Project.  Not uncommon.  Just open them from the Project Browser, or select one instance of them in the project and click on Edit Family.  Then save the family anywhere where you like.

...in my defense, I was stuck at "RFM" (Rich Music Format) and trying to get my Revit file to save to my Motown Library. he, he.
