Problem creating shared parameters and including these in an export to Naviswork

Hello everybody,

I’m trying to set up some shared parameters in Revit 2015 for export to Navisworks but it’s not working. I’ve watched some tutorials and looked through the forum but it keeps going wrong with me somehow. I was hoping someone could take a look at my process to determine where I went wrong.

My goal is: Adding text parameters (Metadata information) when creating Revit families which are transferred with the family into a project and subsequently into an export to Navisworks .NWC file (so when you open the file in Navisworks and click on an element, in the property tab the text parameters from the Revit family are visible)

My best guess is to do this with shared parameters. I’ve done the following steps:

  1. Create a new family and perform a simple box extrusion to have an 3d object.
  2. Go to Manage -> Shared Parameters
  3. Create a new Shared parameter file and name it: Parameters Test
  4. Create New Parameter group called: Parameter Test
  5. Create new Parameter with the following details:
    1. Name: Parameter Test
    2. Discipline: Common
    3. Type of Parameter: Text
    4. Tooltip Description: Empty
  6. Close Shared Parameters tab by pressing
  7. Select the Object
  8. Select the Family Types button
  9. Press Add in the Parameter section
  10. Select Shared parameter and press the button Select…
  11. Select in the shared parameter file: Parameter Test
  12. I make it an Type
  13. I nest the parameter under Identity Data in Group Parameter under:
  14. Press
  15. Enter Test 123 as Value for the Parameter Test value.
  16. Press

Here is where my first question arises. In the Properties window this information is not shown. This is due to the fact the property window shows instances properties. But when I repeat step 11 to 16 and at step 12 I select Instance. It will still not show in the property window (my feeling says something must have already gone wrong)

Continuing I perform the following steps

  1. I load the family into a new project.
  2. In the project I go to Manage -> Project Parameters.
  3. I press
  4. I Select Shared parameter and select Parameter Test with the following details
    1. I select Type
    2. I group parameter under: Identity Data
    3. Select a Category, for the test I used Structural Foundations
  5. Press Ok and
  6. When I select the object and press Type properties. The shared parameter is shown including its value.
  7. Next I press File -> Export -> NWC
  8. I open the NWC file in Navisworks Manage 2016 (I know the difference in version but unfortunately I cannot change this)
  9. When I select the object in Navisworks the shared parameter is not shown in the property tab. I’ve tried switching between some levels in the selection tree (Forum thread suggested to look one level up in the selection tree at the tab Element in the Property window, but it’s also not showing there)

So somewhere I did something wrong. I hope someone can help me.

Regards,

Peter

Welcome to the forum.

Your doing the Revit part well. Its' at the moment of exporting to NWC where you might be missing something. Before exporting, click on Navisworks settings. The default setting for "Convert element parameters" is "None". Change that to Elements or All. Then, export to NWC. In Navisworks, when you select the object and see its properties, there should be a new tab in the Properties window, called "Element (LcRevitData_Element)". Your shared parameter should be there.
