Hi fellas!
I know that it's not possible to open Revit families made in 2018 with Revit 2016 (as an example).
But is it somehow possible to copy the family geometries or use a 3rd party tool that converts the files or something like that that I might've missed?
Thanks in advance!
As far as I know it isn't possible via the normal way.
However, you are able to create a workaround if you save the family to a SAT and import that back into a previous version of Revit.
You will lose all parametric content and abilities. So no more intelligent families, just "dumb" geometric shapes.
I would only recommend this procedure if creating the specific geometry takes a lot of time and parametric content isn't needed for this specific element (say for instance a generator for a UPS).
So I first tried the IFC route and it converted all the families to generic models. What I had was some furniture files from a manufacturer that were in 2018. We are still using 2017 and going to 2020 in about a month or so. But for now, the way I worked around it was to open the original Revit file in 2020 and I brought in the pieces of furniture (RFA's) from the manufacturer that i needed. Double clicked on them which opened them in the family editor. I then I exported to an ACIS (SAT) file. Went back to 2017 Revit and created a new furniture family. Then clicked on Insert > Import CAD > and searched for the SAT file and boom. Now I am not sure if this will work for all types of families, but I was able to convert the furniture family of a manufacturer. Hope this helps. Let me know. I know I could have just opened the individual families in Revit 2020, but I first inserted them just to have them all in a model to look at them.
