Placing Doors and Windows

I am fairly new to Revit, I am using the newest Student version, and recently I was using it and it stopped allowing me to place doors and windows. I can choose any from the family but when I try to place it over any walls, it shows a grey circle with a crossbar through it. I have closed and reopened the program but no matter what I try, it does this.

That means you are not placing the door or window properly in the wall. Windows and doors are hosted families. When the host is not detected, or when the window is being placed outside the wall (completely and/or sometimes partially) you get the NO GO circle Icon telling you: "you Need to find a host to place me"

  1. Try to be on a floor view,
  2. and not that it doesn't work when view is set to coarse but try to Switch view Setting to medium of fine so you can see the layer of the wall
  3. and try to hover the mouse along the borders of the wall when placing the insert (for some odd reason this No Go Icon Pops sometimes when the Cursor is in the middle of the wall

Hi @Anonymous,

@RDAOU must be on the right track...

I would add that you should check your sill height in the window properties. If too high, your window can end up outside of your wall.

Check the height of your wall as well - for the same reason. (don't forget that units by default are milimeters in Metric units.... )

If you want to check if your revit is bugged, draw a wall, and the switch to axonometric view. make the wall as high as possible and very wide. Then try to place your window (still in axonometric view).

That way you will be able to check the position of he family according to your inserting poin, etc...
