Pattern-based generic model vs. curtain panel?

What's the difference between these two types of pattern-based families? I noticed that I do not get the pattern-based generic model family in the dropdown menu when I divide a surface. Also, I'm unable to use the repeat command to populate imported families throughout a divided surface if I use the pattern-based generic model family template rather than the pattern-based curtain panel family.
