Override workset of elements in model group

we have model groups for various units that comprise the architectural model and are linked into the central model. These groups are given a workset that designates their construction as being built-offsite. However, there are some components in these groups that need to be shown differently, such as climate control unit exhaust grilles. 

Is it possible to create an override in the central model that changes the graphic behavior of the elements even if they remain a part of an "offsite" workset? Can I create a specific filter that will override the graphics of elements which are otherwise controlled by workset and/or revit link?

I tried to set this up with a filter and i can grab the exhaust grilles and control the lineweights but it won't allow me to override the color.

had to disable halftone on another filter and manually set lighter colors.
