Opening IFC Models and Linking to Revit Central Model

Hi All,

I would want to know what is happening here and if there is a fix to it. (I hope there is)

We receive an IFC file from a consultant. I use Revit 2020 to open the IFC File and add worksets. The main purpose of this is to manipulate the elements on the plan on which graphics to show (for example corbels or double tees dont need to be shown on plan but they are showing because of the view depth). I do a Save As of that file so it will be a .rvt file after the save and this file will get linked over to our central model.

I noticed that the columns and other structural elements are hollow once I linked it in the central model. By hollow I mean the column is only having 4 planes instead of it being a solid geometry.

The odd thing is, If I link the IFC file directly to our central model, the column is showing as a solid geometry (which we would prefer due to the graphics on plan).

I noticed that its only creating those hollow geometry if there is a void or a cut though of the element. My hunch is that there is a process that the Revit software does to the IFC model and sees the model as planes/faces instead of a solid geometry.

I would like to know why and how to show the correct solid geometry in Revit because if I link the IFC file directly to our central model, it is showing the correct geometry but we fail to manipulate the graphics using worksets.

Hoping for a solution to this.

Thanks!

I've attached a sample screenshot of the column. Those lines passing through are voids and Revit somewhat sees it as planes/faces too.

PS we use worksets to manipulate the graphics because the IFC file that we receive is coming from a Tekla export and once we open the IFC file in Revit, it recognizes the elements as structural framing and columns only. So we can't use Visibility/Graphics - Model Categories to manipulate because if we uncheck the structural framing, all of it will be turned off.

Hi @mdeguzman-CP

Please check it in Solibri Anywhere.

If the import there is made as solid, please post or send example IFC file.
