When creating a family, we always set the appropriate category of the family. It ensures the component appears in the right schedules.
However, we can additionally set the "OmniClass Number" of the family, and I want to know the exact usage of this number. Why does it exist?
Thank you.

I assume it is only there to allow deeper filtering of schedules, am I right?

OMNI Class is some classification standard used in construction/facility management. I once tried to use it, but ended up dropping it and have never met a single person or software using that. For specifications we use CSI.
For the brief time I tried to use OMNI Class I noticed it misses many categories we usually use. So you may add your own categories. but that kind of defeats using a standard.
Revit uses an outdated OMNI class. There is a way to load an updated version. But I forgot details. but just the fact it keeps changing tells me a lot....
I'm sure there is a good reason to use OMNI, but it is just not for me. Someone else may be bale to give better advice.
Some projects in the US (mostly government and healthcare) require to assign Omniclass # to components in accordance with their BIM standards and facility management.
