Octagonal Dome

I'm trying to create a domed roof for an octagonal building. I've tried creating a mass, but it wouldn't let me make the shape I wanted. What's the best way to go about creating this structure?

You can use the trajectory segmentation for sweeps to do this. This option is only available for curved sweep paths. Here is an example of a hexagonal dome. If you set the "max segment angle" to 45 you will get an octagonal dome.

Simply, a sweep form with an octagonal path (item 1) and a sectional profile sketched in place (item 2).

Create a Sweep Form

If your octagonal base is unequal, two different edge lengths as in art-deco domes, you can array a set of two wedges (items A and B) that are extrusions cut by a vertical extrusion void (item D for wedge A, void for B not shown). The profile for the small wedge B is created by picking the edge of wedge A while creating the extrusion as it has a different profile than that of the longer wedge A.

Group the wedge A and B then and polar array the repetitive quarter (item D) 4 times at 90° into the result.

Hope this helps,
