Object styles for floors and other model elements

Hi there, to control the cut line weights of different types of floors in a model, I have created some floor subcategories within object styles.  However I can't seem to figure out how to assign a floor type to a floor subcategory, like you would with solid geometry when building a family.  I've looked everywhere for the option but to no avail.  Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks Barthbradley.  I'm trying to avoid manual overrides and do this 'properly' as it will be far too time consuming to override every one of these elements in every view.  I have already set the correct lineweight to the subcategory in object styles, I am just trying to assign an object to the correct subcategory so that it reads correctly in all views automatically.

Also we are using LT so view filters are not an option for us.

You're hamstringed then.  Learn to love what you have or upgrade to Full Revit so you can do it the "proper" way.   😉

Object styles don't work for system components.  Your could use floors, roofs, and ceilings for three different types of floor with different line weights.  If you want to go beyond that, maybe it's time to consider full Revit.

View filters are great but we have been taught to use them as a sort of 'uber work around' for when all else fails, but manual overrides would be too much of a hassle. Isn't object styles the master control and is where these things should be controlled from in the first instance? It works perfectly for controlling the display of most types of elements, and you can create subcategories... which surely implies that objects can then be associated with these sub categories.... otherwise what is their purpose? We have custom reference plane and window glazing types for example which work perfectly well without manual overrides. I'm just trying to make the same process work with floors. But how do I assign different floor types to different subcategories...? I haven't got a hard no on this specifically - is there actually no way to use floor subcategories?

Hi ToanDN, thanks, well that would mess up how the rest of the ceilings and floors look sadly. I clearly can control the line weight of all floors and other system components using object styles, and I can create subcategories of them, there just seems no way to assign a type or element to a subcategory. Is the ability to create subcategories of system components just a red-herring? A weird vestige that some programmer forgot to delete at some point maybe? I thought that this was all looking far too intuitive to be true 🙂

You haven't got a hard no on this?

NO

How about that? Hard enough?

Thanks Barthbradley. That's pretty hard, sure. Don't get frustrated, it's just people often suggest comples work arounds for how to do simple things on these forums, but you're still left wondering how the software actually operates, or is intended to operate.

Don't you agree though that object styles is where this SHOULD be controlled from at least? Or at the very least autodesk should remove the ability to create additional floor object styles if these can't actually be used for anything.... rather than waiting for people to realise that it's just an inoperative feature and mysterious dead-end.

Makes sense to me.  Post your wants and wishes on the Ideas Forum and see if it gets traction.  I'll support you with my vote if you do.  Maybe the two of us can make a difference and effect change.   😉
