Multiple Area Plans

The Knowledge Base appears to say that you can have multiple area plans for the same level. If so, what's the procedure? I made a duplicate of one area plan, but changes to the duplicate are reflected back to the original.

Different area schemes use different Area lines, enabling different area plans. My understanding is each scheme gets its own area plan per level.
