Multi-type false tag

I have to tag locations on walls where holddown straps are to be installed.

I created a new wall tag and rather than using a label, I added a text box to indicate the strap type.

I also created multiple types within the family and I would like each type to display a different string in the text box.

Do I need to use an instance parameter to set it up?

Text box is static.  You need to use Label.

If you want text box, you need to create multiple text boxes, associate each with a Y/N type parameter, which turn on/off for each tag type.

I'm not trying to tag a property of the walls. I'm just using a wall tag because it will create the leader for me pointing towards a wall.

Wouldn't a label grab a property of the tagged object?

Option 1a (preferable):

- create a Holddown text shared parameter

- add it to the project > walls category

- create a label in the tag family, add Holddown shared parameter

- load tag family in project and tag

Option 1b:

- create a label in the tag family and add Comments parameter

- load tag family in project and tag, enter Holddown info in Comments parameter for tagged walls

Option 2:

 - use Generic Annotation symbol with a label.  You can point to whatever you like and edit the label however you like without any complication.

Yes.

It wouldn't make sense to tag a property of the walls because the holddown isn't a wall characteristic, it's placed at specific foundation corners per structural. I just want to make a smart family with multiple text types rather than making three new families like this:

Thus, I am trying to understand what is the best way to edit this family I've created such that i can change the information in the text box from the type select dropdown.

Then don't use a Wall Tag, use a Generic Annotation family with a label.  You can place it, point it anywhere with single or multi-leader, enter the label value as you like.
