To accommodate the inframe column in the middle of the storefront I created this vertical mullion profile that has the column square:

Problem: when trying to dimension to the center of the column, nothing there can be snapped to.

Q: will creating reference plane in the profile family help ? I change the reference type to strong (S) or not a reference (N) but nothing happens.

Yes, I can create a tiny break there at the center of column, but maybe someone here knows how to get around that.

Thanks

Reference planes and reference lines in the profile family do not serve as a reference in the mullion/curtain wall...I believe that when using a custom mullion,  the only thing you can snap to is the grid of the curtain wall.

What you can do is, in the profile family, set the Horizontal and Vertical reference planes (highlighted below) to define origin then reload it into the model. This way they would line up with the grid of the Curtain wall and become the reference you are dimensioning to (see below)

PS:I am not sure if nesting a detail Item or CAD file for the CL into the profile family would make it snapable when loaded into the model/curtain wall mullion but you can try

I tried the imbedded Detail item family. The mullion profile family accepts it oked but nothing shown in plan when reloaded. The mullion is still not snap-able. This is worths investigate as WHY.

To alter the origin ref pane to center of the profile will compromise the storefront configuration when equal horizontal pane is selected (results in one pane will be shorter).

Any thought ?

@yes_and_no Post the storefront...your sketch neither reflects the configeration you are trying to model nor can one tell if it symetric/offset with respect to the grid. Apart from that, not much thoughts except that of storefronts not usually consist of a single frame and not of the same type of mullion...so when you model one, use that to your advantage

If it is a generic storefront what you are modeling then you would be better off with the generic mullions and no need for those details
