I have Revit 2018 educational version. We have utilized the program for a couple of months now, saving the same project under the same name. All of a sudden it wont open the project saying it was created in an older version and needs to be upgraded. However, it was always created in the same 2018 version and only used in that version. Even if you say to upgrade it, it says it failed to open document. Below is what appears.
Title edit: Model upgrade Revit 2009 to 2018 and failed to open document error
Will try.
I used the backup file and it worked fine without having to upgrade. I was
able to continue to work off the document without the upgrade. This
happened with other students projects have been working on as well.
If anyone else has any thoughts, please let me know.
Thanks
I've been seeing similar messages when running an audit. Probably not related, but watching for responses.
Hi @Anonymous
Please check the Desktop App to see if there are any Revit updates available. For information on using the Desktop App see the following article: About the Autodesk Desktop App
Note: If you are not able to download updates through the Desktop App, the following article has information on downloading updates through the Autodesk Accounts page:

I updated Revit to Revit 18.2 and I am still having the issue.
It states to upgrade the model from 2009 to 2018 (even thought project was
made in Revit 2018) and I select to upgrade the model. It then opens Revit
and states failed to open document.
Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for getting back.
Can you send us your template file and recent journal file to investigate this behavior?
Also, please send a screenshot of the error message.
I can send you a private folder to upload if you chose not to share publicly. Let me know.
Looking forward to your reply.

Does the model open, or is it some other "document" that is failing to open?
Hi @RobDraw
Once we hear back from the OP, his journal has to be parsed for a load exception error and usually, the underlying cause is a hard disk space jam.
If the file is corrupt and has to be recovered, we can do so only from a backup file.

I think the problem is with a family you loaded from internet to the project.
may be that family was created in 2009 version.
think about the families you recently added to the model.

Hi Viveka,
I'm having exactly the same issue. All of my backup files generate the same error and my program is up to date. Is there a way to retrieve my work?
@Anonymous can you upload a copy of the latest file?
Also, please review this AKN article for information regarding where to find any available product updates as well as information about how to install them. Just want to make sure you have the latest updates installed.

Hi Matt,
I've just updated to 2018.3, but am still having the same issues. I appreciate you having a look into this for me!
Hello, @Viveka_CD,
Did you ever find a solution for this issue? I am having the same problem.
Thanks
I am having the same issue. I have a file that was made with revit 2018 and it says it has to update from 2009 to 2018 and then says failed to open document.

We have also had this issue but ONLY with projects we are pulling down from BIM 360. We are on 2018.3.1. It's happening on multiple projects. Any solutions?
