Has anyone ever experienced any data loss when upgrading a file from Revit 2016 to 2017 (or similar)? Is this a possibility?
We currently check the models and drawings for any changes following an upgrade, so far we have not found any differences. Other companies I've spoken to are doing the same thing. I'm questioning if this a worth while exercise?
How does the upgrade software work? Is there any chance it could affect the model geometry, data or views?

On (rare) occasions I have found that during upgrading the newer Revit version had some issue with particular families (was notified during the upgrade process) requiring to let Revit delete that family from the project. First modifying/replacing the family in original Revit version usually resolves the issue.
As mentioned, Revit notified about the issues so nothing major.
At the moment with Revit 2017, which has changed the font rendering, we have to check the texts throughout the project (e.g. titleblock, tags, detail views)

When upgrading a model to a new version you will always have a risk something could go wrong.
If this happens, Autodesk does a pretty good job telling you what went wrong and what might be deleted or edited.
What we always advice when customers want to upgrade is the following.
In the warnings you always get the ID with the warning. This makes it possible to review those objects in the older version to see if it has a big impact if those objects change.
