Usually when I place a lighting fixture family into Revit, it will show up in 3D but only the annotation symbol will show up on my electrical plan. I downloaded a new lighting fixture family but for some reason the model is showing up in my electrical plan instead of the annotation. Any ideas? Thanks!

Change the Visibility Settings of the Model Geometry in the Family. Sounds like you want it to be hidden in Plan/RCP. Uncheck the box then.

The box is unchecked but it still shows up.
Sounds like a 2D Representation then. Go to Plan View in the Family and see what's there. Maybe a Masking Region?
TIP: Toggle the Preview Visibility ON.
Here is the family in question. I hope you find it helpful.
How are you placing it? On vertical face, face or workplane?
Vertical Face Representation:
Face and Workplane Representation:
Vertical Face? Then you are seeing 2D Masking Regions that are in the Family.

It looks like this may have been the issue. How do I get it to show the annotation symbol in vertical face representation?
You can't. Tag it in the Project instead.

I am unsure what you mean. I'm pretty new to making revit families. None of my other light fixtures give me an option for a plane to attach it to. They automatically snap to my walls and place an annotation symbol when I place them. I dont know why this particular model is giving me a different set of options when placing it in the project.
Because it is a face based family so you have more options to choose to host it. The one you had is a wall base family so it always choose a wall as the host.

That makes sense! So theres no way to change it from a face based family to a wall based family?
There are. However,
1 - it is unnecessary. A face based family can be more flexible in a lot of conditions.
2 - it may not address your original question.
So, share the family here so we can look at it and suggest suitable approaches.
I'm needing to change it to wall based so it is consistent with our other lighting fixtures. I dont see myself placing these lights on anything other than a wall. I've attached the family. Thanks!
