Missing Content

Hi everybody,

It's been a while we had this issue in our office that we lose information in between synchronization of people. I have checked about four months ago by sending the file to Autodesk and they checked nothing was wrong with file and its family types but we still have this problem and it is very frustrating and irritative.

This is what happens as an example: one or two people are working on details in drafting view and other on door schedule and … then they synchronize in order and all of a sudden we see let say part of details are missed or deleted from central file and nobody deleted them but they are gone. Same thing in model and when in happens it is not just latest changes that could be elements or changes we have worked before a few synchronizations.

Anyway, I could not find a solution and it seem s by having more people in team things get more complicated. I really need a proper solution for it.

1. Check that all users are on EXACT same Build of Revit. ( including any outside consultants.)

2. Make sure all users are creating new local copies each day.

3. Make sure all users STC then close the file when done working, or if idle for long periods.

4. Make sure all users check "relinquish" when STC.

5. You can restore a backup to retrieve lost work and copy/paste into a current file. But this should be a last choice after exploring all other possibilities.

-Check your network /connectivity. This can sometimes cause problems if a user loses connection to the network.

-Also, sometime "missing" items are not really missing--they are not visible. There are many, many things to check

when elements are hidden. Check here:

I have seen Purge Unused create a paradox situation where elements that were created by one user found them deleted after a Synchronize with Central (SwC).

For example, lets say the wall type "Wall-X" has not being used yet and User A runs Purge Unused and allows Revit to purge Wall-X. In the meantime User B has just spent 15 minutes placing walls using "Wall-X". Neither user has used SwC yet.

Now User A uses SwC and the Central File no longer has wall type "Wall-X". Afterward, when User B does a SwC Revit does not create a new wall type "Wall-X", in order to keep those walls, the walls are deleted instead. No such wall type exists.

That's a bad sequence...paradoxical event. I haven't tested Revit 2019 but it's true in 2018. Revit ought to trap this sort of situation and regard the presence of an element as more important than the fact that it is based on a type that is no longer in the central file.

I could see a similar situation occur with most any type of element assuming it's underlying type is purged from the database prior to someone else completing their task. Purge Unused can be quite dangerous.

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for your response.

All steps you mentioned as BIM manager I check everybody and everyday, and all items are checked on daily basis. Elements are not hidden as an example: drafting views on a sheet when a sheet disappears and drafting views are still in view browser or vice versa. I checked connection with every log for synchronization and it is not the case either. I have sent file two times for Autodesk and they checked and file is fine. I am really curious to know what the problem is. In terms of saving or send and receiving information (Synchronization) I hate to say that but Graphisoft (Archicad) manage the model much better than Revit. It's been a long journey to find a solution and it is not easy one whatever it is.

Hi Steve,

Yes, I noticed that in Revit 2015 and I never let anybody to purge model elements as they are created once in our template and I know what the consequences are then I told team not to touch purge unused. We keep them in file. These sequential synchronization and losing something which is deleted and synched to central and then somebody else lose this is really problematic.

Thank you
