Revit 2018
Is it possible to display shadows in transparent materials?
Reasoning: I am showing trees in a shaded plan view. The tree needs a transparency because there are plants below and other elements I want to show.
The family I am using to represent a tree is a sphere.
Thanks,

Hello, The simple answer to your question unfortunately not. I've had similar issues before and below was my solution. Its a detail item within the tree family. For both the tree in plan and the shadow of the tree. It only displays in plan. Both the Tree plan and the shadow are solid hatches within the detail item, Then once inserted into the project i've overridden the surface transparency using a filter. Hope this is of use!
Hi,
The workaround I've developed requires using multiple, overlapping views (from top to bottom):
1. Detail - all linework and annotation
2. Surfaces - all forms with colour, 40% transparency
3. Plants - showing only plants at 0 transparency, casting dark shadows that can be seen though view 2.
4. Extra Views for overlapping elements. e.g. another for shrubs, another for trees, with tallest elements on bottom layer.
This creates the appearance of transparency while allowing shadows. Not ideal but a solution nonetheless.
After some playing, I added trees and shrubs back to the plant view but with transparency, so as to show tree colour over plants beneath.
