All of the computers in my office use the same image, and same deployment to get Revit installed. However on 2 machines, the Materials Browser is popping up in some sort of incomplete version of itself (see image)
On these particular machines, you can still change what material something is - by selecting from the list of other materials loaded in the project. However, you cannot edit any of the materials, add new materials, or even add libraries.
What else could be the cause of this?

Funny, I just when through this yesterday with a new install on another workstation. I just monkeyed around with all the toggle controls and finally the side bar with the Graphic, Appearance, etc. Tabs showed up. Frankly, I think it's a bug, because it's been posted about a couple of times in the past month. Just plain weird. I got no explanation for it.
Following...
Just to be clear...what was missing originally was this toggle circle in the capture below. It wasn't there initially -- and then it was. Actually, thinking back, maybe it appeared after I banged the computer with my shoe. ![]()
@nharburger : try repairing the Autodesk Advanced Material Library Files. You'll see them listed as separates. You can also download and reinstall them separately. Use AVA. https://ava.autodesk.com/
AVA was unable to provide the files in question. But Reinstalling the materials Libraries was the solution to the problem.
For my Revit 2019 - I was able to just re-run the Revit installation (it skipped the revit install itself, but went on to install the materials libraries as part of the process) and fix the problem. But when i tried doing the same for Revit 2018, which was having the same issue, the Revit reinstallation did not fix the issue.
Finding the 2018 Material Libraries as an independently downloadable installation package was difficult - it took a lot of searching to track it down. Eventually, I found links to the content i needed within this Infraworks Knowledge Post.
It seems like it should be easier to find than that... But my problem is now solved, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Sorry I suggested AVA. Frankly, I'd rather go see the Dentist than deal with AVA. Not kidding.
Glad you found an alternative source. FWIW: you can also REPAIR those Advanced Material Libraries through the Window's Installer UI.
Have fun!
