Mastering Shared parameters

Hi all,

I have to schedule company famiily dimensions.

As well known, shared parameter are the best for they appear in schedule.

My question is: is it better to replace the family parameter with the shared one or it is better to add the shared parameter and lock it within family parameter using formulas?

If you start the families from scratch then you can use the shared parameters directly. If you already placed a bunch of families in project, then replacing non shared with shared parameters can cause reseting parameter value if they are instance. In such case, using formula maybe a safer approach.

Is their an issue with using the in-built Shared Parameters?  Most of the Parameters you see in a Family Template are Shared Parameters.

...or maybe I misread. You want to create differently named Shared Parameter for say the in-built "Height"? Maybe named something like "My Company Height".  Well, a lot of the in-built Parameter are not deletable.  If they aren't driving anything, then you don't necessarily need to do anything with them. But, giving them a formula like Height=if(1=1, My Company Height, My Company Height) would gray them out and make them inaccessible in the Project.  We do that often.   Eliminates confusion by eliminating options.

Hi,

yes build in parameter are really annoying.

To solve the problem I dont make them drive any parameter within the family and in family parameter window I have added a text header written DO NOT USE.

What do you think?

What do I think about "DO NOT USE"?   If you want my honest opinion, I think it's silly.  There are a lot of in-built parameters that you probably won't use, such as those under Identity parameters. Are you going to put "DO NOT USE" for all those as well?  Of course you're not.

Hi

I am answearing here to not open up a new post.

I am trying to menage as best as i could Shered parameter. I would like to have list of shared parameter so named Company Prefix_Description.

i have noticed that same shared parameter can be used in different categories . E.g.  XX_Height can be used for column height, foudantion height and so on.

So my question is : it s better prepare a bunch of shared parameter example for main dimentions and add in different category families or prepare shered parameter per each category ex XX_Height_Column and so on? Or its better prepare shered parameter so named XX_1,XX_2... XX_n ?

Thanks for any tip
