MASS SURFACE

Hi Everyone,

i have a problem with a mass with no volume, i find it totally impossible to modify the mass shape according to my needs.

How was it created?

is a simple conceptual mass with no volume created by 3D points and divided by reference planes

If it a loadable conceptual mass family then you have to edit the points in the family. Or make it adaptive.

If it an in-place mass then you can edit it in the project directly.

of course I know that, it is an in-project mass but it's for me impossible to change its shape, I can edit it by clicking on it and click again to the toolbar to modify the surface shape...after doing this it continue keeping the same shape it had before showing no one warning

Of course you do.

Make sure you use TAB to select the Form and not the divided surface.  If select correctly, after click Edit you should be able to see and alter all the points defining the form.

Hello @Irreb

As it is more of a surface than a mass with a volume, try to associate it with a plane. Then you will have a better control over it.

Hey @Irreb

looking at the model you attached on the other post, I have seen that You have a surface which you divided then on it you have placed model lines and and points so that you use to place your adaptive panel later

  1. You divide the surface
  2. You enable the U and V grids from the ribbon
  3. You rotate the Grid to suit the surface
  4. You adjust the U and V grid layout by setting the desired number in the properties pallette

You do not add flying unhosted lines and points to divide your surface with.

Second part on the surface...its flying in space.. If you edit its profile you will never be able to control its shape as desired

  1. Set a Referance plane to match your elevation
  2. Give it a name ... FR
  3. Start the Mass In place and set that FR as the workplane
  4. Place the points on this plane... associated with it
  5. Then select two points at a time and use spline throu point tool till you complete the profile
  6. Finish your mass

Now you can divide its surface as per Part one of this reply

PS: I will answer the question on the adaptive panel on your other post

@Irreb

This is how your surface or what your divided surface should look like (no model lines and points to divide

thanks a lot but if you've seen i don't have a perfect horizontal grid..i mean that i have different spaces between one and another (for example i need to have the second to the first at 3000mm and the third to the second at 1500mm...how could it be possible using U & V grids?

You need to divide the surface using intersect with reference planes for
the 3, 3, 1.5 division. Draw reference planes, name them, and use them to
divide the surface. The tool is right next to the UV on the ribbon.

The grid a base which identifies the nodes which will host the elements...Patterns may also be applied to surfaces.

What controls the 1500 and the 1300 is the placement of the adaptive elements. Example: if you have a 4 points adaptive panel, it doesn't mean it has to be place on 4 adjacent points! You can place an adaptive point every second point for instance and your panel will occupy 4 grids instead of one

When the pattern of adaptive panel placement is uniform, u use repeaters which will place the elements in the same order as the first u place and when it is random then using dynamo to place the panels become a necessity

In reply to your question which you sent me as private message relating to a divided surface with cut panels at the borders where you will need nodes to host your adaptive component.

First you will need to apply a pattern to the surface you got. After that, you can manually stitch the surface borders with pattern component which don't require to be hosted on nodes of divided surface and will/can resolve the problems of placing pattern components (triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, etc.) on non-rectangular and non-evenly spaced grids.

Working only with nodes; After you switch/assign a pattern you can can place additional points hosted by intresection along the border of the surface and later once done switch the surface back off (Note: You cannot host points by intersection is you haven't applied a pattern to the surface. See Screencast below

Using Dynamo can help you place adaptive components. However; on small to medium scale projects it is sometimes not worth to go down that road
