Is there a way I can select a bunch of objects and remove them completely from the project? I want to group my families into commercial and residential in my template then be able to grab many objects at once and remove them completely from the project.
There's many ways. Depends. One approach would be to delete the Families from the Project Browser. This will delete all instances of them in the Project.
Right but this would take too long. I don't want to have to find and delete each family in the project browser. I want to do a box selection in 3D or plan view and grab say 100 items and just *poof* delete from project.
Expand All Categories and Crtl-Shift multiple.
....you say you don't want to "find and delete each family". How else would you do it?

Actually deleting them via the Browser or via a schedule is much more quickly than select hundreds of elements in a view and delete. Do a box selection in a 3D view with a fair amount of elements is a pain and prone to crash the program.
If you don't want to look for families in the browser, then select one instance in a view, right click, select all in model, then delete.
My template is setup with all my residential and commercial families spatially segregated. Selecting everything I want to be removed is not hard.
This problem has been solved by creating a custom PyRevit tool. See how to build that on this thread
