Managing Design Options

Hi guys,

I'm currently creating house plans for a volume builder and I am having some issues with design options.

I have created 2 separate facades and can change through design options seamlessly with no loss of dimensions, tags, walls etc.

However, when I change the primary façade from option A to option B all my window tags and dimensions that are on option A are deleted. I created separate dimensions which correlate to each façade as I know that tags and dimensions cant work through separate design options. But I don't understand why revit feels the need to delete whats on the current model.

Thanks for the help.

Are you setting up your Design Option Views? Doesn't sound like you are.

I don't want to create separate views. Its so that if a client chooses one façade its just a quick change to make it the primary model and then that set of construction drawings will be complete.

Huh? That's how you create DOs.  You need to set up Views that will go onto the Sheets.

...maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Are you wanting to promote and accept a particular DO?

...here, drill down into this link about DO Workflow:

That's it I want to promote an option as a new primary option.

I understand how to change it in the view but changing it in the view template section will only change it in that view whereas I want to promote say option B to be the primary for the entire project.

Then make the Option Primary.  If you no longer need to other Options, then delete them and Accept as Primary the remaining last Option.  This will cancel out the Design Option Group as well as the Views dependent on them.   Get it?  Or is it that I don't get you?   Help me out so I can help you.

Hi @Anonymous

Because you only have one view, the Tags dimensions etc, are associated with the elements in the design option you placed them on.  by switching the Primary, this switches the elements in the main model and therefore, as far as the main model is concerned the other elements no longer exist and can not be referenced by the tags/dims etc.

As @barthbradley says, the standard workflow would be to have 2 views.  If you do not want to have 2 views, then I would think that if in both DO's, instead of deleting and recreating walls etc, you just adjusted the same wals and elements, then the association to the elements between DO's shouldn't break, but instead update.

This is not true for rooms though, I dont think...

There is no Design Option workflow without dedicated views.

Annotations and details (such as keynotes, dimensions, and tags) are view-specific elements. They cannot be part of a design option.

To document a design option, first dedicate one or more views to the option. Then add the desired annotations and details to the dedicated views.
