I am generating a duct model using model in-place components because i am modeling from a point cloud. We are finding that you cannot cut cross-sections through the in-place model without the entire model being in the cross section. We want to make the features cuttable for generating cross-section views. Is there a way to do this?
Is there a way to make the 'duct fittings' category cuttable? We need to keep generic models separate from the duct models.
Perhaps you can try using nested component:
- Model object A as a loadable family under Generic Model category. Load in project.
- Model object B as a model in-place under Duct Fitting category
- Insert object A family as component and finish the Duct Fitting model.
I did a test myself and below is the result. If you nest a Duct fitting family inside a cutable family such as a Generic model or a Mass then it will cut correctly.
Hi @jared.white
question...assuming that you are capturing everything manually in Revit; i am wondering why you are modeling everything in place? if you are modeling over a point cloud it is not a must to model in place...you can still model the elements in Family editor (regular, adaptive or line based) then load them on to the PC? Or is there a specific reason for in-place modeling

Agreed with @RDAOU,
in-place models are unstable and will not allow you to do everything you do with standard objects.
The talent of modeling as built lies within your good judgement as of how to approximate the real dimensions.
Keep in mind that whatever happens, you will NOT be able to reach a precision up to the centimeter.
Just compare points next to each other in your point cloud, and you will quickly realise that it ois all about getting the right median value...
Stick to standard families as much as you can and you will save loads and loads of time for the future use of the model!

He would save time also on this job! I've seen guys taking off as builds from point clouds manually and in place! It's torture!

Thank you for your response.
I'll admit that I am not a BIM expert. We have found the model in place options allow you to build complex shapes right on top of the point cloud. I don't understand how to bring the section of point cloud you are editing into the family editor. For most of our customers, they are just wanting to cut sections and produce drawings from the geometry. If you have a faster way to do this, I would greatly appreciate the advise. It seems creating several families for custom fit duct work would be time consuming.
It is ridiculous that ALL 3d objects in a Revit model do NOT cut correctly as should be expected. This results in a totally inadequate, and most importantly an *un-intuitive* user experience. Which consequently, causes users to loose productivity, important project time and experience unnecessary stress.
