Making annotation symbols for devices "snappable" to other annotation symbols

Hi,

So I'm trying to make it so that in the floor plan view, I can use the move command and click on a side of a square annotation symbol for a device and be able to snap it to the side of another square annotation symbol so that they look nice and clean. I have read that you can make them snappable by creating a masking or filled region in the annotation family but this doesn't seem to work or I am doing this incorrectly. Does anyone know of a good solution? Thank you!

OOTB Revit tags already do this.  Grab and drag the blue dot on the leader.

...what a minute. Are you wanting to snap the leader to another side of the tag, or snap the leader to another tag (no can do)?

No this is not for leaders at all. This is for an annotation symbol for a security device. I want to be able to line them up with other security devices's annotation symbols by snapping so I can quickly and accurately do this. Basically I want the annotation symbol's border to be something I can grab when using the move command.

It is not possible.

Darn. Revit really needs to make a way for tags and annotation symbols to have this ability. How do people get their symbols to all line up nicely on a drawing then for a clean, professional look? And thanks!

Are you talking about symbols inside device families or symbols/tags placed directly in the model?

Symbols inside a device family. I have a card reader and it has a symbol for it's representation on our floor plan that is a square with the letters "CR" in it to indicate what it is. I want to be able to place card readers in a model and then have their symbols line up properly.

Then it is a no.  You may have some level of alignment with symbols and tags placed directly in the model, but not with what inside the device families.

Why don't you set up "Strong" Ref. Planes in the Family that you can snap to?

Just tried this and it unfortunately doesn't work. The only snappable items are the 3D geometry.

I'm not following you, but Reference Planes, if set to something other than "none" are "snappable".  You may need to Tab-Select to find them.

I think this has sparked something and I think I am on to something. I will let you know once I've tried it and thanks!

Nested annotation symbol placement is driven by the family, not the project. You would need to make provisions within the family for different alignments either through instance or type parameters.

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

You can use a filled region in family editor to enable snapping. I created a generic annotation family and drew my valve. Then used filled region in the shape of the smallest triangle Revit would allow, and then made the filled region white. I am now able to snap lines to the valve. Hope this helps.
