Make Hinges Cut Door Panel

Hey guys having trouble getting this hinge family to cut the door family. The hinge leaf is recessed into the door panel and the door jamb so they will be flush when finished. But I cant get the hinge leaf to actually cut the jamb or the door panel no matter what I try whether its setting families to cut with voids when loaded or adding voids or using the cut tool. I'm attaching the door family, the hinges family, and the hinge leaf family. Appreciate the help and looking forward to solving this mystery.

If the hinge is a face based then it can only cut either the panel or the jamb, not both.

Some other possibilities:

  • Model the hinge as two face based families, one cuts the panel, one cuts the jamb. Place them to align.
  • Model the hinge and voids directly in the door family to cut.

But the real question is, why do you even model this stuff? This LOD is really uncalled for.  Hinges are covered by hardware groups and specifications.  You only need typical door elevation legends showing hinge location and quantity (although quantity can be covered by hardware groups schedule as well).

@ToanDN you are right it definitely doesn't need to be done but we do these Enscape rendered walk throughs and the camera is constantly passing by door jambs so I just figured I'd try it.

@barthbradley Looks like Aussie bim guru avoided this void cutting by not making the hinges flush. I'll probably just do that.

Hi @skyeg321

You can put hinges on the doors and all the hardware you want (handle, strike plate, lockset, deadbolt).

It's going to take a bit of work depending on how parametric and constrained you want it.

If you don't need it to be parametric, just make some voids and place the hinge where you need it.

  • This HINGE is not a nested family that you just can load into whatever door.

It needs to be modeled directly in the door family making voids in the panel, frame, jamb, etc..

this way it can cut and be aligned in all its angles, to look sharp and aligned.

* you could schedule the hinges and all hardware if you upload all info into those families..

Ok yeah kind of a bummer that it can't cut the void with the family. I still don't understand why there is the option 'cut voids when loaded' on the hinges if it doesn't work... But thank you @aRcHiTeCt.JM
