Is there a way to make all the layers in a linked CAD file one colour so that i want have go through the visibility grahpics of each view and change the colours manually? I thought I could do this by changing the settings in 'Object styles' but for some reason even though I change all the layer colours to black in the settings, some of the original colours the cad file does not change. is there another alternative to solving this?

Have you tried modifying the .dwg before linking it in?

You're the one that said you wanted all the layers the same color. Did you have something else in mind?
Try assigning all objects in the AutoCAD file to Color "Bylayer". That should give you better control when it is linked into Revit. There is still a chance that some items (embedded in blocks and assigned colors - not Bylayer) may not change color in Revit.
Those colours are company standard colours so the aim is not to change the colours in cad, they have have to stay the same. In revit however I'm allowed to change the colours.

You could make a copy of the file and make the necessary changes.
Alternatively, there is an option in the import dialog to change the colors to black and white.
