Make a dynamic flashing family

Hi to all,

I made a family for a steel 1mm flashing. I first set up the ref. lines and that worked well.

Now I made an extrude, but I can't get it following the ref lines.

When I lock the end line (130 degrees piece) I get constraint errors. This piece must be also always 50mm long.

Can anybody help me out?

Thanks in advance!

Best to set up your Ref Line/Plane "rigging" first and make sure they flex.  Once you got them flexing correctly, you can align and lock your sketch lines to them.

I think I got it fixed here.  I may have overlooked something.  I didn't test thoroughly.  See if you can break it.

Thanks a lot!! You made the correct one!

Some questions left: how did you manage the t parameter (thickness off the flashing)?

I made a "skelleton" of ref lines now myself and made them flex correctly.

Now I am not sure how to make a 1mm thin extrude that felx with the ref lines?

Thanks in advance!

The "t" parameter is inside sketch mode.   Usually, I frown on parameters inside sketch mode -- exactly for this reason. They are hidden.  You can correct by aligning and locking the ALL sketch lines to Ref. Planes OUTSIDE of sketch mode.  But, you only have one sketch, so maybe you can leave it be.

...not sure that fully answers your question.  But, I should point out that everything is hosted to a Ref. Line Workplane. This is very important.  Set a Ref. Line Work Plane and draw on it.

I carefully studied your model, but can't get it working myself.

I have made a ref.lines rig and it works well.

But when I draw the sketch of the extrude, I don't know how and what I have to link to these ref. lines.

That's because I am quit new to Revit...

When I link the extrude lines to the ref lines I constantly get constraint errors and the params that work well with the ref.lines don't work anymore...

I don't understand. What do you mean by "link".  "Link" has a specific connotation in Revit.  I don't think you're talking about that.  But, the issue you are having sounds like it may be related to the sketch lines not being hosted to a Ref. Line.  I mentioned this above as being a critical.  Before you sketch anything, pick a Ref. Line Work Plane to draw on.

By link I ment connect or lock the lines to the ref.line

I reconstruct your design and was able to make a working family with ref.lines rigs, so far all clear now.

I pick the ref.planes workplane and skteched the lines for the extrude and then stuck: from here I don't know how to lock or connect these lines to the ref lines.

When locking the lines of the extrude sketch to the correspondending ref. lines, I get a lot of constrain error's. How did you fix this in your working model?

Thanks!

I did some work on the rigging.  It seems some additional Ref. Lines were needed, and some Ref. Lines were hosted to the wrong Ref. Line.  You can inspect the hosting by selecting a RL, opening Edit Work Plane and pressing "Show".  Additionally, all the parameters need to be locked in order for it to flex without errors.

I think it flexes okay, but I didn't test thoroughly. You may find the magic parameter value that breaks the whole darn thing.

Regarding the parameter names, I just substituted my own ("A" through "I"). You can change them to whatever you like obviously.

If it meets with your approval, feel free to mark it as an accepted solution.

Hi, thanks for the help, it works great!

I have tried to make another family in the same style and can't make it working.

See attachment - I made a rig of ref lines and these are working well.

What I still don't understand is, how to constrain the extrude lines (not yet in the model) to the ref lines.

I picked a ref working plane, like you said in the start of the extrude lines and follow allong the other ref lines, but then they don't follow the ref lines while testing.

I know I do a basic thing of Revit drawing wrong, but can you explain to me how you did it with the earlier family?

Thanks in advance!
