Locking View templates

Hi,

We've been using worksharing on a particular project which is all set up and now we're pulling construction documents out of it. The thing is that we've set up a lot of different plans to use view templates. Now the problem is, even after instructing the entire team to never change anything in the view template, someone or the other changes one tiny thing which is very difficult to bring to notice. And this tiny thing sometimes spoils all the views on which the template was applied.

Is there any way to restrict people from changing the view template? Some way to lock it for editing?

I've been using a "Super workset" for locking certain elements, grids etc. but I don't think a view template can be assigned to a workset.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is to use the Transfer Project Standards tool to duplicate your view templates out to another, otherwise empty project file. Then, later, you could transfer them back in, overwriting the existing ones with the same name, to ensure that they are exactly the same as when you started.

We have had a similar problem here.  Given the current functionality of Revit the best solution we have come up with is one of education and getting people to use the 'Temporary View Properties' to change the view setup if they need to.  We also encourage users to use 'Working Views' for most of their modelling work - these aren't controlled by templates and are never placed on sheets - we have a 'Master Reset' template that puts these back to a known starting point if the visibility settings get too messed up.

All that said I think View Templates could be improved - in addition to being able to lock them as you have suggested being able to list which templates are assigned to which views would be very useful.

haha, my bad.  It wasn't view templates I was thinking of, it was filters.  😉

education is the answer to "locking" view templates or some kind of custom app that would "automatically reset the templates back to some known standard (like the transfer project standrds solution offered but done wiht the API so it could be done with "1-click").

As for listing views and the assigned templates, you can do that already with a view list.

Educate your team to create a working views so they can manipulate the view by themselves and only use the View Template for final drawing views. Create a protocol/memo stating that no one will ever change the view templates and in that way you can assert your authority as well. But say this in a nice way...Smiley Happy

Regarding filters and view templates, you might want to look at my add-in View Filter Manager at

Revit add-ins: CAD Purger (delete UNUSED and selected line patterns & line styles, find and delete CAD), Rooms To Spaces, Schedule Utilities (Calculated Values/Combined Parameters To Tags, reuse view filter rules in schedule filters), View Filter Manager at Revit Apps Store

I'm sure that would be very useful, unfortunately I've no budget to purchase these kind of things and really IMO it should be part of the core program.
