We have an issue in our our office where a workshared file on our server becomes read only when 2 or more people are working off it from their own work stations. The only way to work on this file is to go into explorer and untick the read only box. This is only a temporary fix however and can some times only keep the file workable for 10-15 seconds. File seems OK if just one person is accessing the central file, obviously defeating the purpose of worksharing. We also have an issue of 400GB of server space disappearing for minutes at a time, then re appearing? We think these 2 issues may be linked? When the local file is trying to bounce back to the central file and having no space available maybe the default is to lock the file? Something out IT guys have yet to solve, we think that our whole system may not be up to it? Has anyone else had similar issues?
Thanks
Andrew
Sorry I'm not much of an IT guru, without getting all the specs off our IT guys this is what I know.
Windows Server
Fujitsu TX2540
48Gb Ram
2Tb SAS in RAID 1
Dedicated Raid Controller
Does the read only happen to other files? Have you tried running a Virus & Malware scan on your Server / Networked computer's to ensure there is no Virus or Malicious software running?
I think your IT guy needs to monitor the network in/out the server see if it gets disconnected intermittently. I have never had it happened with Revit central file but I did have it happened with AutoCAD files before. I opened a file from server normally and it suddenly became read-only. Turned out my workstation got disconnected from the server for a brief moment that caused it.
Very long folder/file paths (exceeding 256 characters or something like that) can cause saving problems too. Check that.
Also, from what you described, your server seems not very stable and it should be taken care of as soon as possible by IT.
We had a similar problems with our server as well but it didn't just apply to Revit files but all types of files including AutoCAD, Word & etc. Found out in the end that our server couldn't handle the increased work load from Revit file sizes, increase in staff as a result to this the server just could not handle the demand that was thrown at it given its age. Maybe your server is on the older side and is due for an upgrade like our's was. No problems for us now since the upgrade, but you could have a different problem on hand & I suggest you get your IT department involved to review / mange the situation at hand.

to add on @ToanDN
we saw this a few years ago it came down to a switch issue
not all switches were Gigabit we had a mix of 10/100 and Gigabit switches.
once they were all upgraded to Gigabit switches the read only went away
