Linking Multiple Revit Files Together

I am getting ready to begin the modeling of a very large AMC Theater in New York City. I think the easiest way for us to manage file size is by modeling each auditorium in its own revit project and linking each auditorium together to a base model by a shared wall. What is the best workflow for accomplishing this and how do I get the models to link together next to each other?

Overall I am looking at around 15 or 20 portions of this project.

There are two common ways:

1. Create the master model and link it (origin to origin, overlay) to each auditorium model as the background so that you can model the auditorium at the correct location.  You may have to change True/Project North if the orientation is at some odd angle.

2. Model each auditorium model and link them to the master model.  Locate them accordingly and publish the shared coordinates back to the link files.  You don't have to worry about the orientation when modeling the auditoriums.

Plan carefully what should be modeled in the master and what should be in the auditorium files, how you are going to document the drawings, in the master file or in the link files.

I haven't experimented with this yet but I should be able to stack the linked models in revit as well correct. For example if I wanted to do the first floor in one model in the second floor in the other. I would be able to stack these by adjusting elevation correct?

Yes.  After linking the files in you can move them to any location, in any direction XYZ.  The only thing I would try to avoid is mirroring, but that is another topic.

I recently should model a large collection in Revit. The complex includes about 20 buildings with different uses. I read your advice. about both methods that you raised, Can you give me links to an instructional video or more details so that I can better understand?

I have the same issue. My final file with those links are getting huge in bytes! Did it happened to you? How to make more lite files when linking revit models?
