I'm trying to use RVT files for individual units in an apartment building. I link in the RVT file into the building, and add it to a model group; then make copies of that unit (as a stack)
Each floor plan is supposed to only show units on that floor. Yet, I am seeing and am able to select model groups/linked models that are above and below that floor plan. (example: Level 1 shows Level 2 & 3 units, and it's not supposed to). The View Range is set to only show items on Level 1, there are no range views/scope boxes either. What is wrong with this?
I'm using Revit 2020, if that matters.
Not sure why you are placing links into a group? That might be the issue. Generally using linked files this way you would copy the link to each location and the files would update based on the link. Never seen this issue using links this way.
Alternate is to just have units as a group and copy that instead of the link.
Thanks for your reply, but I did further testing and discovered the cause: I was using the "by linked view" option in the view settings; using the "by host view" fixed that problem. Turns out the host's visibility settings can suffice well enough.
As for your question: I'm trying to bring back units into Revit. My firm went back to CAD versions of them because the model groups were problematic and caused a lot of headaches. Many of those headaches are prevented by going with linked in rvt files. You should try it sometime; it shows good potential.
Links and groups work equally well depending on your workflow. If external users are editing the units while the building is being designed then links make sense
If units are being done by the building design team, groups make more sense. The result is the same any edits repeat for all similar units.
I am question making groups out of the linked units rather than copying them to the correct position.
Good to see the fix was straight forward
