Hi all,
We are a coordination company that cooperate with several sub-contractors (They provide us discipline models).
We model Structural and Architectural in the firm.
I have always find more useful if they provide us native Revit file.
But some of them prefer not share info (e.g. Families,Templates..) some just do not use Revit as main program thus Ifc in need.
By your experience, you think a full profitable cooperation can be achieved with the solely use of Ifc models?

Could one efficiently collaborate / coordinate using IFC? 100% yes ... technically speaking other stakeholders have no business in business in the native Revit model you produced and vise versa. (Edit: There will always be someone arguing the visibility and graphics aspect ... but again even by providing a .rvt those would still complain about the V/G)
Although some do use IFC to for the reason you mentioned but in reality it is not just about families, templates and digital content. While you consider a native Revit file would or might be more convenient for you to carry out the coordination, other stakeholders look at it from a different perspective.
If you are not collaborating in a common data environment. Put 1 and 2 together...providing you with a native Revit model simply do not fit. The only time I would send someone the editable native format document is either when I am transmitting it for the purpose of editing or when I am handing it over and it is not bouncing back to me in the future.
If you are collaborating in a common data environment, say BIM 360, you might be able to have access to a Revit model but that would not be their model but a package they published which you would consume, coordinate, mark up (in case of changes and then they implement the changes in their model. (but again what they publish doesn't need to be a .rvt it can as well be an IFC)
Add to the above that not everyone uses Revit so IFC is eventually what you will end up with. So why not standardize the processes and procedures and stick to one format applicable to everyone on the project.

Many thanks for your clear and nice explainantion.
I was always kind of reluttant in cooperate using Ifc files because every time subcontractors provided us with ifc file, the exporting procidure was totally messy (Surely my fault not have given proper standardization).
Lately I am coordinating through Ifc(s) because one of our subcontractors uses AllPlan.
I may say it is not as catastrophic as I tought, thus questioning myself if standardize Ifc and use it as solely coordination models.
I surely will improve my DEP regarding so.
